Post #49: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”

Jesus said not to worry about what you will eat or wear.  God feeds the birds so they don’t worry, and He cares more for you created in His image than them. And He clothes the grass with beautiful flowers that are soon gone. God knows what you need; you do not need to chase after such things like the world does. “But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” [Matt 12:31] He then goes on to say, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” [Matt 12:32] and, in another place, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” [Matt 6:19-21]

From the heaven eyewitnesses featured in Heaven Is Beyond Imagination, we can learn more about what Jesus is telling us. First of all, God is providing more delicious food there than we have here, and although no animals die and we can’t eat meat, the substitute God has made for us out of light is better than the best we have here, steak or whatever. We never get messy and have to wash, and there is as much or as little as we want with no cost or work required. It is a free gift out of God’s love for us. We are given several different garments depending on the occasion such as a different robe before the throne than what we normally wear, which depends on our activity. Again the garments are a free gift and no cost or labor is required.

As far as the treasures are concerned, there is a rewards building there that contains all the rewards stored up for us. We lack nothing there and even if we turn to Christ the last few seconds of our life and have no time to store up treasures in heaven, what we will have far exceeds our best imaginations and dreams. We will not feel any lack and there will be no envy or greed. But also some have said that rewards are stored for us even before we accept Jesus. It seemed like some people who never accepted Jesus still had memorials in heaven if they did Kingdom things anyway.

So what are treasures in heaven? Anything that is consistent with God’s character: love, grace, forgiveness, kindness, empathy, generosity, compassion, humility, etc. So those are the things we need to be concerned about, not money, food, clothes, fame, fortune, recognition, or anything else in this world that is not Kingdom stuff. Reading all of these testimonies of heaven makes all Jesus told us more real and sensible. Seeing how God’s love and care for us is “beyond imagination” can draw us closer to Him and enable us be more trusting that he CAN and WILL provide everything we need if we truly trust Him.
